Tracking Technology Explained

One of the most daunting aspects of vehicle tracking for most people is the sophisticated technology involved, which we at Veetrack fully understand. Most suppliers speak in jargon but we aim to make things as clear and easy for our clients as possible, ensuring your solution is not only perfect for your needs but completely hassle free.

The basic tracking system follows a three step process:

Part 1

Information is sent from satellites to the GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver, which calculates the location of the vehicle. This receiver is fitted to your vehicle in an unobtrusive place, such as under the bonnet, and causes no damage. The aerial is usually placed behind the tax disc.

Part 2

The vehicle tracking unit within your vehicle – which is usually attached to the dashboard – records and displays this location as well information such as speed and time. This information is sent to a remote server using a mobile phone network, in Veetrack’s case this is Vodafone, our partner of 23 years. This server receives information from your vehicle every few minutes.

Part 3

Using the internet you can then access the information on this server. An application you can use to do this is OnlineAVL2, which applies this data to a map of the area in which your vehicle is travelling and allows you to view the vehicle on this map. You can then view all your fleet at once in a list with your own set details, such as speed, or look more closely at each unit.

The basic tracking solution is all about sending and receiving data – it’s really that easy.

Of course, it is possible to add to this system in many ways but the principles stay the same. Whether you’re adding remote locking equipment or messaging services, vehicle tracking solutions are accessible and easy-to-use.

Veetrack are passionate about vehicle tracking and want our clients not only to feel the benefits of our knowledge but to feel secure in our straightforward approach.
